REACh
The REACH (Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health) grant, awarded to the BPHC (Boston Public Health Commission) by the U.S. CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), is a 5-year initiative focused on reducing health disparities in Boston. The program targets key areas like improving access to healthy food, increasing physical activity, enhancing early care and education quality, and promoting adult immunizations.

East Boston, alongside Mattapan, has been selected as a priority neighborhood for this initiative. BPHC has partnered with the EBHFC (East Boston Healthy Families Collaborative) to engage local agencies and residents. Together, we aim to ensure the program aligns with community needs and delivers meaningful solutions.
Active Transportation: A Component of the REACH Program
The Active Transportation component of the REACH grant focuses on improving transportation, public health, and community planning in East Boston. This effort aims to help that our community has safer streets, better access to public transportation, and opportunities for active mobility like walking and biking.

As part of this work, we have organized activities to gather feedback and identify priorities from East Boston residents:

-
Community Workshop: Residents, local organizations, and city representatives came together to discuss key transportation concerns and opportunities.
-
Bilingual Survey (English and Spanish): Over 120 responses helped us understand community priorities, including safer streets and improved public transportation.
-
Mapping Activity at the Farmers Market: Participants identified specific locations in East Boston where improvements to sidewalks, bike lanes, public transportation, and green spaces are needed.

The insights gathered from these activities have shaped a draft Action Plan, which outlines strategies to address the concerns raised by residents. The plan highlights ways to enhance pedestrian safety, improve public transit, and make East Boston a healthier, more connected community!
